A frozen iMac is stressful. An iMac that will not start when your business files, family photos, client projects, or years of work are on it is a different level of urgent. Knowing how to recover data from iMac systems safely starts with one rule: do not keep experimenting if the Mac is showing signs of hardware failure. The wrong next step can turn a recoverable problem into permanent data loss.
Start by identifying what kind of failure you have
Data recovery is not one procedure. The right approach depends on whether the iMac still boots, the internal storage is visible, the files were deleted, or the machine suffered physical damage.
If your iMac starts normally but you cannot find a folder or specific files, stop using it as much as possible. Deleted files can remain on the drive until new data overwrites them. Downloading large apps, installing macOS, or continuing to work may overwrite the very data you are trying to recover.
If the iMac starts but shows a question mark folder, a flashing folder, repeated restart loop, or a macOS recovery screen, the problem may be a damaged operating system, a failing drive, or a corrupted file system. Those cases need a careful diagnosis before reinstalling anything.
A black screen or no-power condition does not automatically mean the data is gone. It may be a power supply, display, GPU, or logic board issue while the storage itself remains intact. This is where a repair-first diagnosis matters, especially on newer iMacs where the storage may be integrated with the logic board.
What not to do before recovering iMac data
When files matter, avoid common panic moves. They often make recovery harder or eliminate the best recovery path altogether.
- Do not erase, initialize, or reformat the internal drive.
- Do not reinstall macOS until you know the drive and files have been assessed.
- Do not repeatedly force-restart an iMac that is clicking, beeping, overheating, or shutting down.
- Do not open the iMac unless you have the correct tools and experience. Modern displays, cables, and internal components are easy to damage.
- Do not run random “cleaner” or recovery utilities on a drive that may be physically failing.
If a hard drive is clicking, grinding, or taking an unusually long time to load files, shut the iMac down. Every additional spin-up can reduce the chances of a successful recovery. How to recover data from an iMac that still boots

Start with the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Movies, project folders, local email archives, accounting files, and anything stored outside a cloud service.
Use an external drive with enough free space and copy files directly in Finder. If the iMac is behaving normally, create a full Time Machine backup as well. A Time Machine backup is especially useful because it preserves versions of files and can make a later migration to another Mac much easier.
Do not assume iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive contains everything. Cloud sync folders may be current, but local folders, application data, photo libraries, mail databases, and files marked for online-only storage can be missed. Verify that the files you need open correctly from the backup drive before considering the job finished.
If the iMac is unstable, prioritize irreplaceable files over a full backup. Copying a few essential client folders successfully is better than waiting for a complete backup that never finishes.
Use Disk Utility carefully
If the iMac can enter macOS Recovery, Disk Utility may help identify whether the internal storage is visible. On many Intel iMacs, start while holding Command-R. On Apple silicon models, hold the power button until startup options appear, then choose Options.
In Disk Utility, select View and choose Show All Devices. Look for the physical drive and its volumes. If the drive appears, First Aid may repair minor directory issues. But First Aid is not a cure for a failing drive. If it reports repeated errors, cannot complete, or the drive disappears and reappears, stop running repairs and focus on copying data or getting professional help.
A visible drive is encouraging, but it is not proof that the data is safe. The drive may fail under the strain of a large repair operation or a full backup.
Recover files using another Mac
When an iMac will not fully boot but its storage is healthy enough to mount elsewhere, another Mac can sometimes access the files.
Older Intel-based iMacs may support Target Disk Mode. Connected with the appropriate cable, the iMac can appear as an external drive on another Mac. This can be a practical way to copy files without loading the full operating system. Exact compatibility depends on the iMac model, ports, macOS versions, and available cables.
Apple silicon Macs use Share Disk from macOS Recovery instead of Target Disk Mode. Once connected to another Mac, you can share the internal storage and copy accessible files. If FileVault encryption is enabled, you will need the correct Mac user password or recovery key to unlock the data. Encryption is excellent protection against unauthorized access, but it also means no honest technician can bypass missing credentials.
If the iMac has a traditional removable SATA hard drive or SSD, it may be possible to remove the drive and connect it through a compatible enclosure or adapter. This is often practical for certain older 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs. It is not a universal solution. Fusion Drives, proprietary SSDs, damaged drives, and newer soldered-storage models require a different strategy.
When data recovery software is worth trying
Recovery software can help when a drive is stable, recognized by macOS, and the loss is logical rather than physical. Examples include accidentally deleted files, an emptied Trash folder, a damaged partition, or a drive that was mistakenly formatted.
The safest workflow is to create a sector-by-sector image or clone of the affected drive first, then scan the copy. Running a deep scan directly on a weak drive can take hours or days and adds unnecessary stress. Recovered files should always be saved to a separate external drive, never back to the affected iMac.
Software has limits. It cannot repair scratched hard drive platters, revive a dead SSD controller, solve liquid-damaged circuitry, or reconstruct encrypted data without the password. It also may recover files with generic names and incomplete folder structure after serious file system damage. For a few recently deleted files, it can be useful. For a drive with physical symptoms, it is usually the wrong tool.
Why newer iMacs require more caution
The recovery path changes significantly by model. Many older iMacs use serviceable hard drives or SSDs. Some use Fusion Drive configurations, where a small SSD and larger hard drive work together. Both components may be needed to reconstruct the volume correctly.
Newer iMacs, particularly Apple silicon models and certain T2-equipped Intel models, can have storage integrated with or cryptographically tied to the logic board. In those cases, removing a storage chip and putting it in another machine will not recover the data. A logic board repair may be the only realistic path to accessing the original encrypted storage.
